It’s an incredibly easy project that infuses a touch of unique personality into your home décor while championing the eco-friendly spirit of upcycling old denim pieces. Dive into this guide and transform everyday clutter into charming, organized spaces!
Crafting Your Custom Denim Storage Box: An Upcycling Adventure
This innovative idea masterfully blends an ordinary empty box with pre-loved denim to forge a storage solution that’s not only perfect for decluttering but also adds a significant dash of stylish flair to any room. The true beauty of this project lies in its unparalleled customizability. Imagine tailoring a one-of-a-kind storage box using a medley of different fabrics, vibrant trims, or even personal embellishments, ensuring it perfectly complements your home’s unique aesthetic. This isn’t just a craft; it’s an opportunity for personal expression and sustainable living.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this project stands out as an ideal craft activity for families, especially with children. It’s remarkably fast to complete, straightforward in its execution, and requires only a handful of common supplies you likely already have around the house. Picture creating a delightful denim box for every room, or perhaps a dedicated one for each child’s desk, encouraging organization from an early age. Since it’s crafted from recycled denim, it proudly carries the banner of eco-friendliness, proving that sustainable living can indeed be incredibly stylish.
At our core, we’re passionate about discovering novel and enjoyable methods for organization. You might recall our ingenious approach to transforming a simple cardboard box into a chic storage basket, or perhaps our charming tutorial on how to fashion a pretty upcycled cardboard box drawer – both renowned for their ease and adorable outcomes. These projects, including this denim-covered box, are testaments to how creativity and resourcefulness can elevate everyday items into functional works of art, making your home both organized and beautiful without breaking the bank.
To Seal or Not to Seal: Protecting Your Denim Storage Box
When it comes to your newly crafted denim storage box, the question of sealing the denim fabric often arises. In most cases, I genuinely don’t believe there’s an absolute necessity to seal the denim on the box. Denim is inherently a durable and resilient material, designed to withstand daily wear and tear. However, if you’re seeking an extra layer of protection or wish to enhance its longevity, sealing is certainly an option you can explore to safeguard your creation.
Should you decide to proceed with sealing, I would highly recommend opting for a spray sealer. This method offers the easiest application, providing an even coat without the potential for brush strokes or uneven coverage. Simply ensure you apply it in a well-ventilated area, following the product’s instructions carefully for optimal results. Alternatively, a brush-on method, such as using Mod Podge, would also work effectively. Mod Podge offers a versatile finish, from matte to glossy, allowing you to further customize the box’s appearance. It’s important to apply thin, even coats to prevent stiffness or an overly shiny finish, unless that’s your desired aesthetic.
While an ideal scenario would involve keeping your denim storage box pristine and stain-free, the inherent nature of denim makes it surprisingly easy to maintain. In the event of minor spills or marks, a simple damp cloth can often effectively wipe away most stains, keeping your box looking fresh. Whether sealed or left natural, your denim-covered storage box is designed to serve your organization needs beautifully for an extended period, proving to be a practical and charming addition to your home décor.
Unleash Your Creativity: Customizing Your Denim Box to Any Size
The beauty of this DIY project lies in its remarkable versatility when it comes to size. Absolutely! You possess complete creative freedom to fashion a denim-covered box in virtually any dimension you desire. My personal preference leans towards utilizing readily available cardboard boxes, such as those convenient Amazon packages that frequently arrive at our doorsteps. This approach not only recycles but also saves you the trouble of sourcing new materials.
However, your options aren’t limited to pre-existing boxes. For those who enjoy a truly bespoke creation, you can easily cut down larger pieces of cardboard or even combine multiple pieces to construct a custom-sized structure tailored precisely to your needs. Once your cardboard frame is ready, you simply adjust your measurements for the denim fabric accordingly. This means precise cutting of the denim to suit the specific dimensions of your unique box, ensuring a perfect fit.
What if a single piece of denim isn’t quite large enough to cover your entire custom creation? This is where your creativity can truly shine! Instead of seeing it as a limitation, view it as an opportunity to add even more character and uniqueness to your box. By strategically piecing together different shades of denim, you can create a striking striped effect, a patchwork design, or even a mosaic of varying textures. This not only solves the coverage issue but also transforms your storage box into an even more distinctive and eye-catching décor piece, celebrating the diverse beauty of denim.
Versatile Storage Solutions: What Can Your Denim Box Hold?
The utility of a denim storage box is incredibly vast and varied, making it a truly indispensable item for maintaining order and enhancing aesthetics throughout your home. From cozy throws and decorative pillows to your favorite books and current magazines, these boxes can store an impressive array of items. The specific use will largely be dictated by the size you choose to create, but even a smaller denim box offers a wealth of practical applications in various spaces:
- Desk Organizer: Place it on your desk to neatly hold essential office supplies like pens, pencils, markers, scissors, staplers, staples, notecards, and other smaller items, ensuring a tidy and inspiring workspace.
- Kids’ Toy & Game Bin: Perfect for sorting and storing children’s smaller games or toys, such as card decks, dolls, building blocks, or puzzle pieces, helping to keep play areas organized.
- Craft Room Companion: Add it to your craft closet to store rolls of vinyl, an assortment of scrap fabric bits, paint tubes, yarn skeins, or other crafting essentials, keeping your creative space orderly.
- Outdoor Dining Caddy: Ideal for picnics or backyard barbecues with friends, use it on a picnic table to elegantly hold silverware, napkins, and condiments, adding a charming touch to your outdoor spread.
- Creative Gift Basket Base: Serve as the unique foundation for a thoughtful DIY gift basket. Fill it with an assortment of personalized treats and treasures for friends and family, making the gift even more special and reusable.
- Kitchen Spice & Herb Holder: Organize frequently used spices, herbs, or cooking utensils and keep them conveniently near your stove or prep area, making cooking more efficient and enjoyable.
- Living Room Essential: Sit it on a side table in your living room to store small books, magazines, coasters, or even those elusive remote controls, keeping your entertainment area neat and accessible.
- Bedside Table Tidy: Place it on your bedside table to keep chargers, reading glasses, your current book, or a journal neatly contained, creating a serene and clutter-free personal space.

Personalize and Adorn: Elevating Your Denim Box’s Style
Just like many of our creative endeavors, this denim storage box tutorial serves as a fundamental blueprint, offering a fantastic canvas ripe for customization to perfectly align with your personal style, functional requirements, and home décor theme. Here are numerous inspiring ways you can infuse your box with a unique character or enhance its utility, making it truly your own:
- Appliqués and Patches: One delightful idea is to affix some playful appliqués or stylish patches directly onto the denim fabric. This is an exceptional method to inject personality into your storage box, transforming it into a distinctive piece that reflects your interests or adds a whimsical touch.
- Intricate Embroidery: Consider adding some embroidery to the denim for a sophisticated touch. This technique is fantastic for introducing a pop of color, an intricate pattern, or even a personalized motif. If you possess the skill, hand-embroidering the denim allows for complete artistic freedom, enabling you to create custom themes, messages, or monograms.
- Sparkle and Embellishments: Another brilliant concept is to incorporate beads, sequins, rhinestones, or other sparkling embellishments onto the denim. This is a surefire way to add a touch of glamour, texture, and visual interest to your storage box, catching the light and drawing attention.
- Internal Dividers: For enhanced organization, cover smaller strips of cardboard with denim. These can then be slipped inside the main box, acting as dividers. This creates orderly, sectioned compartments, ideal for sorting smaller items and preventing them from getting mixed up.
- Decorative Edging: Elevate the box’s finish by adding a beautiful ribbon or delicate lace trim along the top edge. This simple addition can significantly enhance its aesthetic appeal, giving it a more polished and complete look.
- Functional Handles: For ease of portability, consider sewing or securely gluing sturdy handles onto each side of the box. This is particularly practical for larger boxes that might need to be moved frequently. Repurposing handles from an old purse or bag offers a chic and sustainable solution.
- Paint and Stencils: Don’t shy away from fabric paints! Use stencils to apply patterns, letters, or designs directly onto the denim. This allows for bold statements or subtle motifs that tie into your room’s color scheme.
- Mixed Media: Combine elements like fabric paint, embroidery, and beads to create a layered, multi-textured design that is truly one-of-a-kind.
- Different Denim Washes: For a dynamic look, use denim pieces of varying washes and textures – from dark indigo to faded light blue, or even distressed denim. This adds visual depth and a stylish, curated feel.
Essential Supplies for Your Denim Box Project
Gathering your materials before you begin ensures a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience. For this rewarding DIY denim-covered storage box project, you’ll find that most of the items are readily available, perhaps even among your existing household supplies or craft stash. - Empty cardboard box: The foundation of your project. Any sturdy cardboard box will do, from a shoe box to a larger shipping box.
- Old blue jeans: The star of the show! Dig out those worn-out pairs you no longer wear. The more denim you have, the more creative options you’ll have for customization.
- Lace ribbon: For decorative accents and to add a touch of elegance or charm.
- Fake pearl beads: To add a delicate, refined embellishment.
- Sewing needle: For hand-sewing the lace ribbon and other small details.
- White thread: A versatile color that blends well with most denim and lace.
- Scissors: A sharp pair is crucial for clean cuts through denim and cardboard.
- Hot glue gun: Your primary adhesive for securely attaching denim and embellishments.
- Hot glue sticks: Ensure you have an ample supply to complete your project without interruption.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Craft Your Denim-Covered Storage Box
Embark on your creative journey to transform a simple box into a personalized denim masterpiece. Follow these detailed steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable crafting process:
Begin by selecting the cardboard box you intend to cover. This will be the structural heart of your storage solution. Once chosen, carefully measure its width, length, and height (or depth). These precise measurements are crucial for cutting your denim fabric accurately. For beginners or those seeking a quicker project, a smaller box is often easiest to manage, as it can frequently be covered entirely with a single, continuous strip of denim. However, if your box is larger, don’t hesitate to sew or artfully overlap multiple pieces of denim to achieve full coverage and a unique look.
Next, take an old pair of blue jeans. Cut off one of the legs, aiming for a section that is as wide and long as possible. Then, carefully cut along the inner seam of the jean leg to flatten it out, creating a single, wide piece of denim fabric. Set aside the seam you just cut, as it will be used later for decorative elements – do not discard it! Using the measurements you took earlier, trace the outline of your box onto the denim. Remember to add an extra 1 inch around all sides of your traced shape; this allowance will be used for folding and gluing the denim neatly over the box edges. If your initial denim piece is too small to cover the box in one go, segment the box into individual sides (front, back, left, right, top, bottom) and cut out separate denim pieces for each, adding the 1-inch allowance to each piece.
Now, position your box precisely in the center of the cut denim piece, ensuring the inside surface of the denim is facing upwards. This means the side of the denim you want to be visible on the outside of the box should be touching your work surface. Begin the process of pulling the denim fabric up and over the sides of the box, gently yet firmly. As you pull, secure the denim into place using your hot glue gun, applying a consistent bead of glue along the edges. Once the exterior is covered, carefully tuck any excess denim edges down over the inside lip of the box. Secure these folded edges with hot glue as well, creating a clean, finished rim on the interior of your storage box.
For those who desire an exceptionally polished interior, you can now opt to add a lining. This could be a piece of decorative paper, a complementary fabric, or even another thin layer of denim glued to the inside of the box, covering the raw edges of the folded denim. While this step will provide a seamless and refined look, it is entirely optional and not necessary for the box’s functionality.
Return to the blue jeans you used earlier. Begin by carefully cutting off the seams from the waistline and the bottom hem of the jeans. Reclaim the seam you previously set aside from the jean leg. These denim seams will now become decorative trim elements, adding authentic detail to your box.
Proceed to the four vertical corners of your denim-covered box. Apply a thin line of hot glue along each corner seam. Carefully position the denim seams you just cut onto these corners, pressing them firmly into the glue. This step adds a professional, tailored “seam” addition to the box, mimicking the authentic construction of blue jeans and enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal.
Next, carefully cut a pocket off the back of a pair of blue jeans. Be sure to trim neatly around its edges, leaving just the pocket itself. This denim pocket will serve as a charming and functional embellishment. Apply hot glue to the back of the pocket and affix it to one of the sides of your box, perhaps at a slight angle for a more dynamic look. If the pocket extends slightly past the bottom edge, simply fold the excess underneath the base of the box and secure it with glue.
Now, prepare your lace ribbon, needle, and white thread. Thread your needle and begin carefully sewing along one edge of the lace ribbon. As you sew, gently pull the thread tight, gathering the lace into a pleasing circular shape, effectively forming a round bow. Once you’ve achieved the desired shape, sew and tie off the thread securely to finalize your delicate lace bow.
Take another piece of the denim seam you’ve been collecting. Begin to roll this seam into a tight circular shape, securing it with hot glue as you go to maintain its form. This will create a small, sturdy denim circle. Once complete, take this denim circle and glue it precisely onto the center of the round lace bow you just crafted, forming a layered embellishment.
To add a final touch of elegance, select a fake pearl or a decorative bead. Securely glue this bead onto the very center of the denim circle, which is already affixed to the lace bow. Once this intricate embellishment is complete, carefully glue the entire assembly (lace bow, denim circle, and pearl) to the side of your denim box, positioning it artfully near the denim pocket you attached earlier.
As a final flourish, take a strip of lace or ribbon and neatly glue it along the top edge of the denim pocket. This adds a refined border and completes the pocket’s decorative appeal. At this stage, feel free to incorporate any additional ribbons, lace, beads, fabric flowers, or other accents you desire to further personalize and decorate your box. Let your creativity guide you in making it truly unique before proudly putting it to use.
With these steps complete, your beautifully crafted and highly functional denim-covered storage box is officially ready to organize and adorn your home!

Instructions
- Measure the width, height, and length of the box you are using. Ideally, you will use a small box that can be covered just by one complete piece of denim. Now, cut a leg of denim from the top of the pants, and cut along the seam so you have folded out the leg into one large piece.
- Place the denim on a flat surface so the outside is facing down and the inside is facing upwards. Then, glue the bottom of the box onto the center of this piece of denim.

- Continue gluing around the edges and folding the denim up and over the sides and into the inside of the box. Cut off excess as needed.

- Cut the seams off of the legs, waist, and hem of denim pants, and then glue them along the seams/edges on all four sides of the box.
- Now, remove a pocket from the pair of jeans. Glue this pocket onto the side of the box, at an angle and fold underneath the base if needed.

- Then, use a needle and thread with the lace ribbon to sew it together into a circular bow.

- Next, take a seam you cut off of the jeans, and roll it into a circle, gluing it together.
- Glue this onto the center of the lace bow.

- Then glue a bead on top of the denim circle.

- Now, glue this to the side of the box, by the pocket.
- Glue another strip of lace over the top of the pocket on the box.
