Create Your Own Folded Book Page Paper Wreath: A Sustainable Craft
Wreaths stand out as one of the most effective and versatile elements for updating your home decor. Their inherent simplicity in construction belies their significant visual impact; they are perfectly sized to draw attention without overpowering a space. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, wreaths are inherently designed as temporary decorations, offering the flexibility to be easily moved, swapped, or relocated according to your evolving style or the changing seasons. This adaptability makes them an ideal choice for anyone looking to refresh their interior or exterior spaces with minimal effort and maximum charm.
Having explored various paper wreath designs in the past, including those crafted from old book pages and vibrant craft paper, this particular folded book page wreath has quickly become a new favorite. Its exceptional versatility is a major draw, allowing it to complement diverse decor styles, from rustic farmhouse to shabby chic or even modern minimalist. An added bonus is the opportunity to involve family members in the crafting process. Whether it’s assigning children the task of folding paper strips or having them assist with gluing pieces onto the wreath form, this project offers a wonderful, kid-friendly creative outlet that fosters togetherness and a sense of accomplishment.

The Art of Upcycling: Sourcing Old Books for Your Paper Crafts
One of the most frequent inquiries I receive about crafting with books is where to find suitable materials. Many people are initially hesitant about the idea of repurposing a book for crafts, often assuming it means tearing apart valuable or new literature. However, the essence of this craft lies in upcycling, giving new life to books that would otherwise be discarded. I certainly don’t advocate for purchasing brand-new, pristine books for these projects; instead, the beauty comes from salvaging forgotten tales.
The best and most ethical places to discover books perfect for crafting are often found right within your community. Local thrift shops, various donation centers, charming second-hand book stores, and even your public library are treasure troves. These establishments frequently encounter books that are no longer suitable for sale or circulation due to missing pages, torn covers, water damage, or general wear and tear. Rather than being sold, such books typically end up in the recycling bin or are simply thrown away.
A simple outreach to these local spots can yield a fantastic supply. Politely inquire if they would be willing to set aside these otherwise unusable books for you instead of discarding them. While not every place may be able to accommodate your request, many are more than happy to see these items repurposed creatively, preventing them from contributing to landfill waste. This approach not only provides you with free or very low-cost materials but also promotes a wonderful sense of environmental responsibility and resourcefulness.
Additionally, your local school can be an unexpected source. As the academic year concludes, schools often undertake a thorough cleanout of classrooms, including textbooks and other educational materials that are outdated, torn, or no longer needed. By contacting your child’s school or specific teachers in advance, you might arrange for them to hold onto these books for your next crafting endeavor. This creates a fantastic opportunity to engage with your community, support sustainable practices, and fuel your creative projects all at once.

Beyond Book Pages: Exploring Different Paper Types for Your Wreath
Absolutely, the beauty of this DIY wreath project lies in its remarkable adaptability! While I have a personal fondness for the nostalgic, vintage aesthetic that old book pages impart, creating a wreath that feels truly unique to you means experimenting with various paper types. You are wholeheartedly encouraged to use any paper that inspires you to craft this beautiful wreath.
Consider the possibilities beyond traditional book pages: textured craft paper offers a tactile dimension, card stock provides a sturdier structure and richer color saturation, scrapbook paper allows for intricate patterns and vibrant hues, and even old magazines can contribute a fascinating medley of colors and images. Each choice will lend a distinct character to your finished wreath, enabling endless creative expression.
The standard size of book pages is ideal for achieving the specific fold and sunburst effect of this wreath. However, if you’re working with common A4 or 8×10-inch paper, simply trim them down to a comparable size to ensure consistent results. This slight adjustment opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to incorporate custom elements. For instance, you could use pages from coloring books for a playful and colorful wreath, or print your own unique patterns and designs onto plain paper to perfectly match your home’s decor. The key is to select paper that reflects your personal style and vision, ensuring your handcrafted wreath is truly a one-of-a-kind statement piece.

Personalizing Your Folded Paper Wreath: Creative Customization Ideas
One of the most enchanting aspects of crafting paper wreaths like this one is their incredible potential for customization. With just a few thoughtful alterations, you can transform your basic book page wreath into a completely new decorative piece, perfectly suited for any holiday, season, or personal aesthetic. Beyond simply selecting different types and colors of paper, as mentioned earlier, here are numerous ways to infuse your folded paper wreath with your unique style:
- Add a Statement Bow: Instead of, or in addition to, flowers, adorn your wreath with a large, elegant ribbon bow. Choose a luxurious velvet for winter holidays, a cheerful plaid for fall, or a soft pastel for spring.
- Seasonal Floral Accents: Easily swap out the artificial flowers to align with different holidays and seasons. Think vibrant red poinsettias for Christmas, delicate white blossoms for spring, sunny sunflowers for summer, or rich autumnal berries and leaves for fall.
- A Touch of Sparkle: For a dazzling effect, lightly brush the edges of the folded paper pieces with a bit of glitter glue or fine craft glitter. This subtle shimmer can transform a rustic wreath into a festive decoration for special occasions.
- Distressed or Painted Finish: Achieve a more rustic, antique, or specific color theme by staining or painting the paper before folding. A light tea stain can give pages an aged look, while a whitewash can soften the texture.
- Patterned Paper Mix: Create a dynamic visual effect by mixing and matching different colors of paper or various book pages. You could alternate between colored paper and book pages, or use a gradient of shades to create an ombre effect around the wreath form.
- Exposed Wreath Form Design: Experiment with using a different wreath form (such as a wire or wooden one) and strategically skip sections when gluing your folded pages. This allows parts of the form to show through, creating interesting visual gaps and a more modern, minimalist look.
- Alternative Attachment Methods: Instead of gluing, try tying longer strips of paper around the wreath form. This can create a softer, more flowing texture and a distinct rustic appeal, adding another layer of visual interest to your design.

Displaying Your Handmade Masterpiece: Wreath Hanging Solutions
While this particular wreath design doesn’t come with a pre-attached string, twine, rope, or hook on its back, adding one for display is incredibly simple and highly recommended! In my own home decor collection, I like to keep a variety of wreath hangers in different styles and colors. These handy tools allow me to effortlessly hang wreaths on my door without needing to modify the wreath itself, offering both convenience and versatility.
However, if you prefer a more integrated look or intend to hang your wreath directly on a wall where a nail is used, you’ll need to incorporate a hanging mechanism onto the wreath itself. This is where your creativity can shine through once again. You can easily tie or securely glue a length of twine or rope to the back of your wreath form. For a rustic aesthetic that complements the book page theme, jute twine or a textured rustic rope would be a perfect choice. Alternatively, for a splash of color that harmonizes with your floral accents, consider adding a length of blue or green colored ribbon.
When selecting your hanging material, especially if using a ribbon or a less visible option like fishing line, it’s crucial to ensure it is properly secured and tied firmly around the wreath form. This prevents any accidental breakage or falling. Always double-check that your chosen hanging method is robust enough to safely support the full weight of your beautiful, handcrafted wreath, ensuring it can be displayed proudly for everyone to admire.

Gather Your Crafting Essentials: Supplies for Your Book Page Wreath
Before you embark on this delightful DIY journey, ensure you have all the necessary supplies within reach. Gathering everything beforehand makes the crafting process smoother and more enjoyable, allowing you to focus purely on the creative transformation of old book pages into a stunning wreath. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Old book pages: Approximately 50-60 pages will be needed, depending on the size of your wreath form and the fullness you desire.
- Styrofoam wreath form: The base for your beautiful creation; choose a size appropriate for your display space.
- Blue ribbon: For decorative accents and adding a pop of color.
- Blue and green hydrangea artificial flowers: To add a touch of nature and soften the overall look.
- Scissors: Essential for tearing or cutting your book pages neatly.
- Hot glue gun: Your primary tool for securely attaching the folded pages and embellishments.
- Hot glue sticks or hot glue rope: Ensure you have an ample supply to complete your project without interruption.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Elegant Folded Book Page Wreath
Follow these detailed instructions to create your beautiful sunburst-style book page wreath. Take your time with each step, and enjoy the meditative process of transforming simple pages into a work of art.
Step 1: Prepare Your Pages
Begin by carefully tearing out approximately 50 to 60 pages from your old book. Aim for pages that are relatively intact and free from excessive damage, as these will form the foundation of your wreath. The exact number may vary based on your wreath form size and desired fullness.

Step 2: First Fold – Halfway
Take one book page and fold it precisely in half lengthwise (vertically). Ensure the edges align perfectly and create a crisp crease. This initial fold establishes the central line for subsequent folding steps.

Step 3: Second Fold – Quarterway
Now, take that already folded page and fold it in half again lengthwise. This will result in a page that is folded into quarters, making it narrower and preparing it for the more intricate pleating. Again, press firmly for a sharp crease.

Step 4: Unfold and Reverse Creases
Unfold the page completely. You will now see multiple creases. Reverse the folds so that the two outside edges are folded inward towards the center crease you established in Step 2. This creates a kind of “door” effect with two flaps meeting in the middle.

Step 5: Inner Flap Folds
With the outer edges now folded to the center, take those newly created flaps and fold them inward again, meeting the most central crease. This will make the paper even narrower and give it a layered, pleated appearance.

Step 6: Secure the Folded Strip
Apply a small line of hot glue along one of the inner folded edges of the paper. Carefully fold the other side over, pressing them together to seal the strip. This creates a flat, long, neatly folded paper strip ready for your wreath.

Step 7: Repeat for All Pages
Continue this folding and gluing process for all your book pages. This methodical repetition will create a uniform stack of paper strips, which are the building blocks of your wreath. Having them all prepared in advance will streamline the assembly process.

Step 8: First Layer on Wreath Form
Take one of your prepared paper strips. Wrap it around your Styrofoam wreath form, positioning it so that the longest part of the folded paper extends outwards, creating the “sunburst” effect. The shorter end will wrap around the inner circle of the wreath form, covering it completely.

Step 9: Secure the First Layer
Apply a dot of hot glue to the shorter end of the paper strip on the backside of the wreath form. Press it firmly against the part of the strip that extends outwards, ensuring it’s secure but only overlapping just enough to hold. The goal is to keep the majority of the paper extending from the back for that layered look.

Step 10: Cover the Entire Form (First Pass)
Continue this wrapping and gluing process around the entire wreath form, using approximately half of your prepared paper strips. Overlap each strip slightly to create a continuous, full layer. This initial layer provides the fundamental structure and volume of your wreath.

Step 11: Prepare for Second Layer – Angled Folds
Now, take the remaining strips of paper. Instead of straight folds, fold each strip in half horizontally at a slight angle. This will create a subtle “v” shape or a gentle curve in the paper, adding depth and filling to your wreath.

Step 12: Add the Second Layer
Carefully glue these newly folded, angled strips onto the back side of the wreath, positioning them between the existing strips of the first layer. This technique fills in any potential gaps, adds a second dimension, and enhances the overall fullness and texture of your wreath.

Step 13: Complete the Second Layer
Continue gluing these angled strips into place until the entire wreath has a second, dense layer of paper. Step back periodically to ensure even distribution and a balanced, voluminous appearance across the entire form.
Step 14: Embellish with Flowers and Greenery
Gently remove a few individual hydrangea flowers and some greenery pieces from their main stems. Arrange and glue them onto the front top or side of your wreath, according to your artistic preference. These floral accents will provide a beautiful contrast to the book pages and introduce a natural element.

Step 15: Add a Decorative Bow
Cut a length of your blue ribbon and tie it into a charming small bow. Position this bow among your artificial flowers and greenery, then secure it firmly in place with a dot of hot glue. This adds a polished and coordinated finishing touch.

Step 16: Your Wreath is Ready!
Congratulations! Your beautiful folded book page paper wreath is now complete and ready to adorn your door or wall. Step back and admire your handcrafted masterpiece, a testament to creativity and sustainable decor.

Crafter’s Tip: Elevate Your Wreath-Making Experience
I am always on the lookout for clever hacks that streamline my crafting process and enhance efficiency. When it comes to using hot glue, I’ve discovered two game-changing additions to my toolkit. Firstly, transitioning to hot glue rope instead of traditional sticks has been incredibly efficient; it reduces frequent reloading and keeps the creative flow going. Secondly, investing in a dedicated hot glue gun holder has made a significant difference. This simple accessory keeps my workspace tidy, preventing the glue gun from tipping over, minimizing drips on my table, and, most importantly, significantly reducing the risk of accidental burns while I’m engrossed in a project.
Another invaluable enhancement for any craft station, especially if you frequently create wreaths, is to incorporate a few specialized wreath hangers. I highly recommend a sturdy metal hook wreath hanger for practical door displays, and for those projects where you need a dedicated workspace or display, an amazing wooden stand wreath hanger can be a fantastic addition. These tools not only make the crafting process smoother but also ensure your finished masterpieces are displayed beautifully and securely.
